Free Community FireSmart BBQ

Community Information Session Beginning at 6:30 PM, including a District Financial Health Review and a Q&A with Council about what it means to serve as an elected official.
The District of Houston invites residents to attend a free community BBQ at the Community Hall followed by an informative evening focused on local government, community engagement, and Houston’s future.
The event will be moderated by the Bloom Centre for Municipal Education and will feature two key components:
District Financial Health ReviewLearn more about Houston’s Financial Sustainability Initiative and the work underway to help guide the community’s long-term future. Topics will include:
- Houston’s current financial challenges and future opportunities
- The impacts of recent assessment losses on municipal finances
- Council’s approach to long-term financial sustainability
- Future community engagement opportunities
- How public feedback will help shape priorities, service levels, and future decision-making
Q&A with District of Houston Council
Have you ever wondered what it means to serve on Council? Are you considering running in the 2026 local government election? This moderated discussion will provide residents with an opportunity to:
- Learn how local government impacts our community
- Understand the role and responsibilities of Council
- Explore the time commitment involved in serving as an elected official
- Learn about election rules, nominations, and campaign requirements
- Discover the realities, challenges, and rewards of public service
Nomination packages and election information materials will be available at the event for anyone interested in learning more about running for Council.

Submit a QuestionResidents are invited to submit general, non-political questions for consideration as part of the Council Q&A session.
